Dr. Ramy Saleh's Medium Op-Ed: The Clock is Ticking

"Recruitment for clinical trials is a notoriously hard exercise in Canada at the best of times," Dr. Ramy Saleh wrote on Medium in 'Clinical trials need participants — and the clock is ticking.'

He continues, "Competition is healthy. But where we need to level the playing field is in the recruitment process. That’s why researchers across the country are now collaborating to crowdsource Canadian participants through a web portal at Covidtrials.ca. The site allows people to securely register their information and then at the back-end it matches those people with trials that are seeking participants. It’s all overseen by a medical leadership of physicians and researchers from across Canada. More than 1,000 people have registered so far but there is much more work to do."

NewsTalk 1010 features Covid Trials and Dr. Ramy Saleh

Dr. Ramy Saleh was a guest on NewsTalk 1010 on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 where he described the Covid Trials Canada initiative. Here's an excerpt:

If you want to help medical researchers potentially get there, but aren't sure how, there is a website to turn to.

COVIDTrials.ca aims to match volunteers with the best-fitting clinical trials for potential vaccines or treatments.

The site is the brainchild of Dr. Ramy Saleh, a medical oncologist and trialist. Saleh tells NEWSTALK 1010 he understood there was a need for more information about clinical trials after fielding questions from patients and their families as he worked on the COVID-19 ward at McGill University.

Saleh explains the website can help expedite the process of signing up the right kind of trial participants. "The faster you recruit, the faster you finish the trials, and the fast you might have an answer if there's a treatment or not," Saleh says.

Saleh says recruiting has been difficult during the pandemic because of physical distancing restrictions and with healthcare professionals spread thin.
